I used to hear radio commercials for dealerships (namely Hyundai and Kia) who offered a minimum trade-in value for used cars (usually $3,000). I don't listen to the radio any more, and I can't remember who offered this. I need a dealership in the Dallas/Ft Worth area who will guarantee a $3,000 minimum trade-in on an old car.|||Don't be suckered by "minimum" trade-in claims in ads. Whenever you hear those, you can count on the fact that they selling price of the vehicle has been "packed" to cover for the excess valuation on the trade-in.
That said, TX has clamped down tightly on deceptive practices by auto dealers the past few years. The new advertising standards probably prohibit that type of advertising in TX now. That's a good think, actually!
If you're buying a new Lincoln or Cadillac, almost any dealer could offer a $3,000 trade in for a junker. But if you are looking at a new Chevy Aveo you're going to need a trade worth about $2,700 to get a $3,000 allowance as there's no wiggle room on bottom-end cars.|||to suck u in. they are not loseing money......|||When a dealer takes a car in trade, there are several "values" that can be used. There is wholesale value, which is what the dealer is really paying for your car. There is a trade value that is what you think you are getting, and there is retail value, which is what the dealer would sell the car for on used car lot.
There are many ways to play with the numbers to make it look like you are getting a lot for your trade, but in reality, you will get wholesale value. There dealer may add to the wholesale value, or he can take money off the price of the new vehicle, but the net result will be the same.
For example, if you are looking at a car with an sticker price of $25,000, and the dealer is willing to sell it to you with no trade for $22,500 there is $2500 in discount money that can be applied to your trad, or taken off the price. If you have a car worth $1,000 to trade in, the dealer can sell you the new car for $25,000 and give you $3,500 for your trade. It sounds like you are getting a great deal! The net cost is $21,500 plus your trade. The dealer can sell you the new car for $22,500 and give you $1,000 for your trade, or could sell you the new car for $21,500.01 and give you a penny for your trade. The bottom line is that you are paying $21,500 plus your trade in.
The minimum trade in is a selling tool!
